Info about private plates

Right, knowledgeable folk of mg-rover !! The dvla site sucks ba*** theres conflicting info all over the net so let me explain what exactly I want to do.



I have a private plate on one of my zr's. Now I have been wanting a diesel zr for a while. If I was to purchase one , what are the conditions for transferring the plate onto the diesel ?



Do I need valid insurance on both at the same time and both to be in my name ? Would it be easier just to place the plate back on retention and then transfer it over after. Which leads the question can you put it back on retention with no valid insurance on the vehicle ?



Think that right anyway. Both vehicles will be in my name (once v5 comes back) but only the newer diesel will have a valid insurance after I buy it as i want to use it as my daily.



I googled for a bit and theres conflicting info everywhere and the dvla site as i said is rubbish to say the least.
