The £10 thermostat fix!
Well, after 11 months of a cold running engine, and I mean barely getting to the 7 o'clock mark, I took the plunge yesterday and stuffed an 89 degrees renault 5 thermostat into the radiator pipe. Whoever said it was a tight fit wasn't kidding! Managed to get the thermostat about 3/4 of an inch into the tube (which meant the copper end was still sticking out of the end!) leaving just enough room to jubilee clip the pipe back onto the engine block.
Switched on the diagnostic's and proceeded to drive from Margate to Herne Bay. I watched the temperature climb to 91 initially, before, presumably, the thermostat opened, and then it settled back down to a fairly consistent 86/87. The fuel consumption appears to have improved fairly dramatically, although I'll need a bit of a longer journey to confirm that beyond any reasonable doubt, and the engine seems a bit smoother, although that might just be psychological on my part!
If you're going to do it, I'd just re-empahsise the warning of others to wield your dremmel multitool with caution! I almost cut through the pipe trying to get the original metal band off the pipe. It takes a matter of seconds to cut through the band, so be careful!
