Poor starting

I'd be grateful for any suggestion regarding problems with my 45. I suppose to say problems would be an exaggeration, because it's running very well, it's just starting from cold is a bit harder than it used to be. The first time I start it each day I normally have to turn it over for 7 or 8 seconds before it fires - after that it's ok. The problem started a while back after I had to replaced the priming bulb. I bled the system then and got it started ok.

When it's struggling to start there is lots of smoke at the back, so I guess it's not a fuel problem - could it just be the glow plugs? My understanding is that the 45 doesn't really need them, particularly has the weather is warming up. Any suggestions?
