45td running very rough

Hi all, as above got another 45 but it's running very rough, slow to accelerate and very loud. I changed the timing solenoid as I was 99% sure it was that. I've tried a couple of different mafs I had lying around with different life left in them and still no good. I disconnected the egr plug and nothing. It's making a strange sound tbh and seems as though it's coming from the air intake. When I partially block it it helps. This has my head fried. Please help as it will be really appreciated :) if I think of any other symptoms I'll put them up here..
