Rover 25 1.4 petrol possible cat converter prob?

Hi I have a rover 25 and over the last week it seemed as though the exhaust was either popping or misfiring. Drive it today and the car is very jerky when I accelerate to 30mph it takes an eternity and then the engine management light flashes at me. Any one else ever had this problem? Was hoping I could lump some redex in the system and change the plugs but don't think it's gonna do anything. Can anyone help? Thanks for reading
