Rover 25 Cold Start Stalling Problem

Hi

My daughter recently purchased a Rover 25 (2002, 52-reg, 66K, one owner, good bodywork condition) 1.4L 3-door Spirit model from a dealer. After a few days she noticed the car was running terrible when she first started it so we put it into a Rover specialist garage who diagnosed three cylinders were running low compressions when cold. The garage thought the head gasket had been changed in the past and the timing belt was too tight and the valve timings were out. They advised the valves were probably not seated on the three cylinders so we returned the car to the dealer.

The dealer agreed to pay for the Rover garage to strip down the cylinder head and re-seat the valves. The cylinder head was stripped down, skimmed and all 16 valve seats recut by an engineering works. The engine was then rebuilt by the Rover garage using a full head gasket set and rechecked by the garage. Apparently no ECU codes were displayed during the original diagnosis. After six days in the garage the rebuilt engine was running 100 times better than it ever has when we collected the car on Wednesday afternoon.

Yesterday morning and this morning starting the car from stone cold the cold stalling problem is still there but NOT as bad as it was when we first got the car. The car lacks power and stalls when you try to drive off in it. As soon as the car is slightly warm the engine runs better and does not stall.

I've seen this cold stalling issue discussed in many forum threads and it seems to be a common problem with Rovers. Bearing in mind this engine has just had a full cylinder head refurb (decoke as the garage called it), new head gasket, timing belt, all head seals replaced, new coolant, timing reset etc can anyone suggest what else we look at to resolve this issue??

The Rover garage in their original diagnosis advised the ECU was not showing any codes so we are assuming all the sensors are working ok at this time (or at least when hot).

I am open to any suggestions or recommendations as the car is otherwise a good wee runner, we just need to try and nail this cold stalling issue that affects it for about 5 mins after starting.
