Servicing a friends car....
Hey all,
Did have this posted in another area of the forum but got no answer after a week so sorry for putting it here for the people in the know to check.
My friend owns a 1999 vauxhall tigra 1.6, covered 147k. Seems to be burning oil, blue smoke and rapidly dropping oil level included. She is loathe to spend anything on the car. It took me a week to convince her to service it! Has not been serviced at all for the past 2 years (since she brought it) but just passed its mot!
Any attempt to fix the burning oil is out I've been informed, the money isn't there plus she isn't interested in spending it even if it was, but she's asked me to service the car. I have warned of the risks involved and she is happy. I have brought the oil, air and fuel filters, new crush washer, and got everything else I need apart from oil.
The manual states 15w40 mineral for the engine, but it's burning at such a rate (1.5l per 1000 miles) and the car is barely driven. Would you risk filling with 20w50 to attempt to slow the burn down considering all other engine work has been ruled out? Or go with 15w40.
Any advice greatly taken!
