My 6 - A few months in Update
So I figured id update this a little bit now im 3500 miles into ownership of the car.
Since taking delivery I have done two long trips from South Yorkshire to Sellafield (Via Snake Pass/M6) and a trip to Grenoble, Southern France the latter of which was a 1300 mile round trip. The car is in use for my 20 mile a day commute and some weekend work taking my partner to work and back, so in all about 150-170 miles a week.
MPG wise im hitting less than MG's claimed figures, which is disappointing. My commute which is 25 mins traffic stop start and 5 mins 50-70mph rewards around 30.0 mpg, but long range motorway crusing is not getting anything more than 40 mpg.
Im pleased to report that the car still drives as well as the day it was purchased, despite several issues ive already highlighted with the cars design already. Indeed, on my recent trip to France the car was well poised on the motorway, with the engine being responsive, once cruising, without being too loud and the chassis and handling feeling awesome, with the suspension doing a good job on little lumps and bumps. Sure, the seating position is a little annoying being off centre but all in all, a relaxing drive to France and back... right?
Well at least it should have been. Sadly, other than the drive this is where the perky start to my MG6 ownership ends and issues - some minor, some fundamental, sadly begin to pop up.
Ive contacted my local dealer, where I purchased the car from, to see what the next steps are. The car is in full warranty until Feb 15 and will be warranted for 3 years afterwards.
Issue 1 - Constant Traction and Stability Control Failures.
On a return from France I had 16 alerts between Grenoble and Dover, then 4 on the M1 coming home. These dont go until the car is restarted for some reason - unless its a Traction Control, which was less common of the two. No reason for the change, no change in road surface, direction or speed and it was a clear bright and dry day.
Issue 2 - Tailights
Apparently an issue on all Magnette's, my cars tailights are leaking and the bottom corner on the boot side is now filling with water. Design defect in the rear light cluster is at fault, ive done a report on the design and will send it to SAIC if they want it. I know of a fix, im more interested to what MG do, if they simply replace the light is like turning off the gas on a cooker and saying you put the fire out....
Issue 3 - Suspension
Both front shocks seem to be making excessive noise over bumps, especially on sleeping policeman and the like. The car has hit its nose on bumps my lowered MGF and my RX8 would have cleared. When at speed, say around 75-80 you can feel excessive feedback in the steering wheel. If you take your hands off the shacking is quite aggressive. Id be interested in hearing other 6 drivers experiences here.
Issue 4 - Gear Change
Progressively getting worse and worse, with grinding on full clutch become more apparent as time goes on. Its becoming more and more notchy to select gears, 2-3-4 being the worst, feel is much, much worse than a PG1 box with 100k miles on it. I also have no info from Aisin on which box is in the 6, indeed the last box they say they made was 2008.... Im aware of the gear knob "fix" but thats a cover up, not a solution. I dont know if im doing long term damage to the gear box or the gear assembly
Issue 5 - Trim!
More annoying than a worry, but long term it will be a "me" fix, not a SAIC fix. Im now having rattles on the cup holder (which im going to remove). The drivers door window area, the drivers seat belt height locator and the foot rest pedal - which now rocks when you put a foot on it. The boot carpet is now essentially splitting in half as it is practically unsupported towards the rear, meaning any heavy object pushes the carpet through the gap - as I found out loading in £50,000 worth of electronics. Lovely. Some of these issues could be wear and tear, I dont know how the car has been treated by its rental users, but certain issues appear to be design issues, which should not exist, not with all the cars I know they've scanned and stripped down. If they aren't learning the design intent lessons from these cars then they are wasting money and time bothering to do it.
Issue 6 - Throttle
Yep, still an issue. Im told my car has the latest map, im still however getting juddering on heavy accelerations from about 2000 rpm, or sometimes even 50% throttle up a hill, especially when cold. This is become tiresome to say the least, especially when I have passengers as it can simply be embarrassing. Ive also had the cars throttle fail to respond twice now, im talking foot down hard and no change rpms until a few seconds have past. This is a fly by wire issue either in the pedal, the sensor or the mapping. Ive also had the car start and go to full throttle without ever touching the cars throttle. Go figure.
Issue 7 - Cruise Control
Does not work, never has.
All in all whilst im a little disappointed in some of the basics of the car, it IS still good value for the money I paid and to be fair, its not going to drop much more in value over these next 4 years than any other car in my budget would have done anyway, id certainly consider the TDI which is better built from my experience in one, its certainly good value at the £15000 ive seem them at for a new car, to be fair this is where MG should be pricing the 6 for now. I still maintain though that at paying £22,000 for one id have been feeling much, much less satisfied.
This post isnt and should not be food for the trolls, nor should anyone post up some rose tinted crap , both of which will probably ensue. Its a simple experience of one man thus far, id also point out our 63 plate Astra Company Car is back with GM again for a tracking issue and a replacement set of injectors - its not done 1000 miles yet.
