Auto focus

I am watching BBC News, the paparazzi are snapping away over the heads of people etc, not focussing on anything. I suddenly realised they must have it on auto, something I had never thought of before!



I never use auto, I thought it was cheating so it's always on manual and I focus myself obviously.



9/10 my pics are sharp however, there have been times when my eyes have been sore or tired from the sun, I have thought I had focussed the lens well only to discover when loading pics on to the PC that the photo is absolutely crap :(



So now I am thinking every now and again I will try to remember to give auto a go.



I was wondering how often you lot use auto focus if at all?



I know the paps' equipment will cost thousands and therefore auto will be much better than on my little D50 and lenses faster etc but the basics are the same.
