Help! Possible (likely) alternator fail in S France!
Hi all.
Car has had all manner do work done recently, mobile mechanics up to replace bottom end, coolant system, oil pipes etc etc.
So upon leaving for the south of France, travelling to the tunnel (in the sweltering traffic of the m25 yesterday), tunnel and overnight stay all went well.
Set off today on a 1050km drive to here in azille, and all was well. 80-90mph driving all the way!
UNTIL 50km from azille, the dreaded battery light came on. First thought was dread! Why not yesterday, why not 2 days ago in Britain?
But luckily, all checks at roadside services seemed ok. Belt turning well, tension ok. Battery is old, but seems ok. So my only thought is alternator.
We made it on battery power with an odd squeak like crickets every now and then (audible over the exhaust and roof down in the fields next to us).
So when we got to the gites, car was jacked up and everything checked. Only think of without access to a multi-meter to confirm is an alternator failure.
So. Conclusions.
Battery - could the battery potentially throw the light on? Ie, it's dead and isn't charging - could it throw the light on?
Alternator - my only experience of the light being on is with a failed alternator. However this time no flashing lights on the dash, no power steering heaviness.
So, give me some good news. Give me some ideas. Give me some hope? Please?
I am here in the south of France for another 6 nights and would like to bring the car back with me! Hehe.
Thanks for reading!
