Rear brake help - windback tool required??

I've been trying to sort a really annoying NS rear brake squeak and have removed the whole caliper assembly (not in two pieces if that makes sense) to have a look and clean things up a bit. I've removed the outer pads to clean up the grooves and have come to replace them and refit but the gap in the caliper assembly has become too narrow to place over the disc. Do I need to wind it back then? As I'm using the old pads (only 3k old) I thought needing this tool wouldn't be required? School boy question I know :minxy:
