waxoyling the bottom wishbones?-a few pics of getting there too.

Hello all, what started as a front brake pad change, has turned into a front suspension strip, and re-build,unintended but needed for piece of mind, and a looming mot.One job is leading to another, and another, and is all linked to a car that was not used a lot,and as im finding, does a car no good at all.On having the car,it had a terribly hard ride, found to be partially seized upper arm bearings, both sides.(moral here, for those that do not know they are they,or don't touch them-is grease both, and often). On taking the pads out,and looking around the suspension,i found side to side endfloat,in the n/s arm,so buying new bearing shafts, and needle roller bearings, took them off.

I am changing both sides, even though the o/s had no play, but found this causing the endfloat,so am having new packing washers made up.

the offside shaft had seizure marks from the needle rollers on it.

this is what lack of greasing will cause...and my incredibly hard ride.I had to use a pneumatic grease gun to force grease into the bearing, and they did move after, but the results can be seen, for not using a grease gun, regularily.Once I had took everything off to get at these arms,i thought I might as well change the TRE's,and looking at the top and bottom swivels, which all,had damaged boots,so new ones were ordered, and delivered.I used a vice,to hold everything steady, and still needed to warm the ball joint housing up,to undo the bolt, was really tight too, nearly took the bench from the wall, with the breaker bar.

The locknut for the TRE's needed heat as well, and tbh,the car fought me,all the way,as some can.A little bit out of sequence, but on undoing the shock absorber mounting bolt...here we go..

So its off to be drilled out,im lucky as I have a mate who has a welding/fabrication unit, and a good tool room.I intended to clean/de-rust,and treat the subframe while I had access with the cans out of the way,and then waxoyl it all, which was todays job.I had to drill out the rivets on the bottom ball joints,to re-new them, after wirebrushing the wishbone as best I could. This revealed a few rust areas...

the bit in the middle had me reaching for a screwdriver, and a few prods...

The offside, was in a similar state.

You can't beat it lol..one job to another to another....New ones have been ordered, and I now have to lift the body off the subframe to access the mounting bolts for bottom arm.Im telling myself, this whole area will never have to be touched again,as long as I have the car at least, once I have finished, and its better for me to find it than mr.mot man,but im only saying that to take the pain away lol. These wishbone arms are wafer thin,in their middle sections, and designed rust traps,by the looks, now for a question, how can the inside area be accessed,as I intend to fill with waxoyl?.The obvious point was through the balljoint mounting,as long as you intended taking/drilling the mounts off, otherwise,is there another way to do it?
