Ball joints!!!!

How do you know if a ball joint is shot at assuming that the boot is intact for instance.

Obviously if the boot is torn the ball joint wants replacing.



So if like me you have been playing at mechanic for the day, and noticed a ball joint that seems to be possibly bad, how do you know?



What i really want to know is how much movement should there be? The one i am suspicious of, I can put my finger on the top and swivel it all the way round quite easily.



Should the ball joint be pretty firm with little movevment? I am guessing so , but with out having a new one in my hand to compare , i dont really know.
