Car Service and Belts

Hey all,

So im loving my MGTF.

I decided after reading all these forums, the service it myself..... Actually turned out to be a great success! Took me about an hour or so, only issues i ran into was the plastic plugs on the HT leads were rotten so had to pick some new ones up, and i didnt have a funnel when re filling the oil so spilt a little on one of the spark plugs, but it look like thats burnt off now anyway!

So i was really happy with myself. The service improved performance quite sifnificantly which was ace, but there is still some issues that i dont know how to resolve. Keep in mind... this engine has 160k on the clock (though replaced in its lifetime)

When the engine is running i can hear tapping, and some times if i stop at traffic, the tapping is really loud. But then disapers once gassed. I have no idea how to tell whats tapping but its not good regardless. So how do i resolve this? I have a feeling my headgasket is beginning to fail (sometimes get mayo only on the dipstick). And i have a leak (Thermo,Rad or something similar).

I have been toying with replacing the belt and gasket myself as me and the wife have decided to goto college again! So finances are going elsewhere for now. It looks both easyish and not easy int he slightest! and I dont want to keep fixing an engine when it probably just need replacing, which is defo something i cant do or afford to have done by a mechanic lol.

So one minute the car runs like a gem, noise free (tinyest tapping when the revs go down (3k to 500 for example) but then the engine sounds like a disaster. Advice needed and appreciated, if theres anyone in manchester who knows much about engines i would appreciate some advice (can drive to you obvs :p)

I would like to add the car has never let me down. I want to keep it on the road and have loads of plans for it, Dieseldestroyer and tracey(i think thats her name with the whote TF) mostly to blame and ive done 13k in 7 months. So its well used :p

Thanks in advance

Ian
