MGF exhaust rattle - options?

My stock 1998 MGF exhaust is rattling... when it was last in for MOT the garage said they think bits of the cat were being blown into the exhaust. Passed its emissions regardless (result!) but I do want to stop that rattle! :D

The car's going in for a service soon, what do you reckon, could I ask them to cut open the exhaust and dig the bits out? What if they took some of the padding out as well, would that give me a more interesting exhaust note? I know both the cat and the exhaust will need replacing (and might as well upgrade the exhaust while I'm at it) but for now... what do you think, would it be a cheap solution? I've never asked a garage to do that sort of work so not sure what to expect or if they can/will even do it (they were happy to switch in an upgraded exhaust of my choice, so at least I can do that later).

I'd just change the thing and be done with it, but I'm trying to move house in a couple months so maximum budget mode is engaged!
