Rover 25 losing power...

Can anyone help out with pointing me in the right direction of a 13 year old.petrol 1.4 Rover 25 losing power. It happens a couple of times a week. I drive a couple of hundred miles twice per week and the car never loses power or anything on the motorway on these long trips. It only ever happens on short trips around town. The accelerator can be put to the ground and nothing....no power. I think I can hear spluttering from exhaust area when it happens. It lasts for about a minute or so....then power comes back.



Any help appreciated. Ill answer any qs I can...



Nearly 100k on the clock. Head gasket n timing belt done.
