Rover 420 diesel help needed

Help needed for rover 400

Hi all



I have a 1999 rover 420sldi with a serious problem , I'm looking for advice before I scrap it



The owners before me told me he thinks it needs head gaskets (I've heard this is quite commen with these car ) anyway up intil today the car would take a minute to start and would drive fine today I added some coolant and now the car starts but shakes really violently and lots of white smoke is emitted I have to wait for a few seconds until I can rev the car as the accelerator does nothing at the start it drives but sometimes cuts out and makes a cracking sound when revving the car also revs very slowly and doesn't go above 15-20 miles an hour and literally billows smoke everywhere
