Seat Belt Warning Light! How Too:

MGT/TF Seat Belt Warning Light

I have managed to wire up the seat belt warning light on my 02 TF, as most of my time was spent on research I thought it best to share my findings!

The light on the dash!

This light was fitted for some export markets such as Japan and therefore doesn't work on UK spec cars! But all cars have the lense on the dash!

Once I had understood the wiring diagram it became a simple job!

Some info here on dieters site! More suited for 95-99 model cars!

http://ift.tt/1jJE9dm

How much of the wiring is fitted to an MGF/TF varies greatly, depending upon the year!

1995-1999 MGF's (mk1) has the Lucas systems with analogue mileometer.

2000-2003 MGF's (mk2) and early TF's with Lucas systems and digital mileometer.

2004-2005/6/7 TF's with Pektron systems built by MG-Rover

2008-2010 TF's with Pektron systems built by MG Motor UK

This guide is essentially for Lucas based cars with a didgital mileometer although you may be able to fit it to other models!

The one part that you will need for this setup is a Japan spec seat belt pretensioner!

These are available from Rimmer Brothers and are a clearance item priced at £30

http://ift.tt/1jJE9do

However! They will nolonger post this item because of its explosive nature, so collection is your only option. If only it was that simple, this item isn't stored at there main premesis and kept in an offsite storage warehouse and they only send someone once a day to collect orders from there! So you have to order it a couple of days in advance of you collecting it!

You may also be able to source a used one on ebay for a similar price! These can be identified by the extra wire with a black plug!

To fit this you will need to remove the seat and swop the pretensioners over!

Here is a good guide on seat removal!

http://ift.tt/1yj0X6T

Once the seat is removed you will have to remove the pretensioner and wiring!

It is held on with one T50 bolt same as the ones that hold the seat in!

The two pretensioners side by side, notice the differance!

You will need to unclip the wiring from the front of the seat!

Once removed you can fit the new pretensioner!

And clip on the new wiring!

This is where it starts to get complicated!

(On a 95-99 year car the wiring may already be there on the body loom! You will have to look for a black and yellow plug under the centre console around the ash tray area!)

If you don't have this wiring then you will need to fit the following wires!

To fit the pretensioner plug I found that a Land Rover indicator plug was a direct fit, available new cheaply on ebay! I got one with some wire!

And connected to the pretensioner!

You could just cut the plug off and use your own connectors!

This then needed connecting to some longer wires to run under the centre console to the fuse box!

These can be cable tied to the existing wires and run under the carpet!

As the seat belt switch is on when the seat belt is connected it needs connecting to the MFU (multi function control unit) located on the back of the fuse box! This only applies to models upto 2004 with the Lucas alarm system!

Some info on the MFU here on dieters site! It is probably best to check these wire don't exist before you start!

http://ift.tt/1yj0XDV

The MFU can be unclipped from the fuse box, two clips top and bottom, and pulled down for examination!

The power supply for the pretensioner can be taken form the wire going to pin 2 of the c0016 connector! This is a ignition on fused supply!

It is the second form top right wire!

The other wire from the pretensioner needs connecting to pin 14 of the c0062 connector!

This is the bottom left wire, I used some spare pins from a Land Rover connector! some pins are numbered on the connector, numbers 2 and 12 on one side and numbers 14 and 26 on the other, so it is easy to work them out!

Next you need a wire for the instument light from the MFU, this is taken from pin 10 of the c0062 connector, forth down on the right!

This needs to run to pin 11 of the c0223/c0047 connector at the top of the fuse box!

This connector is where the body loom plugs into the instrument loom, the body loom plugs into the rear and the instrument loom plugs into the front!

(On 1995-1999 models the cable may be already there on the body loom, but it will be missing on all 2000 onwards models!)

But on 2000 onwards models the wire on the instrument loom is already there, but may be missing on 1995-1999 models!

It appears Rover had to omit one of them to stop the warning light coming on!

First thing to do is check pin 11 for a wire connected, it is the bottom right pin when looking at the fuse box, of the main connector, there may be some further connectors further to the right!

If you have a post 2000 model with the wire on the instrument loom then connect a negative feed to this wire (check it with a multimeter first in case you have the wrong wire) and with the ignition on the warning light will illuminate!

This is because all 2000 on models had the same pcb in the instrument panel that contains all the bulbs!

On post 2000 models all you need to do now is connect the wire from the MFU to the wire from the instrument panel and it is finished!

If you turn the ignition on with the seat belt engaged the light will come on for a few seconds before going off!

On 1995-1999 models you now need to install the light in the instrument panel!

There is a guide on removing the instrument panel here!

http://ift.tt/1yj0VvM

And a guide here on replacing the pcb in the instrument panel!

http://ift.tt/1yj0YaF

There are two ways of doing this, solder a bulb onto the pcb from a doner or replace with a pcb that already contains the bulb!

There are two pcb's one for non vvc models and one for vvc models! These are available from Rimmer Brothers or cheaper from ebay!

http://ift.tt/1jJEcGc

You will then need to run a wire from either the MFU or the c0223/c0047 connector as detailed earlier to the instrument panel plug!

This wire needs connecting to pin 10 of the c0234 connector! Which is the fourth one down on the left hand side!

I found it a good idea to test all the connectors with a multimeter before making connectios, this helped make sure I got the right connectors!

2004 onwards models have a different BCU and I was unable to obtain any pinuot information for the seat belt warning light, so I'm unable to offer any info on this! Although the function could be operated using a relay, this is needed as the switch is switched on when the seat belt is enaged and off when it is released!

Using an OEM relay it could be wired as follows!

Pin 1 ignition live

pin 2 seat belt switch

pin 3 negative earth

pin 4 seat belt warning light

pin 5 unused

Then you should have a working warning light!

With the Lucas MFU the light will come on when the ignition is switched on and the seat belt engaged but will omit after a few seconds!

Hope this guide is useful to someone!
