Speedo Transducer

I have got to fit a new speedo transducer to fit ...the original one got snapped off when changing the clutch it is the electronic one with the magnetic rotor and it looks like the square plastic drive has snapped ...how easy is it as i may try it myself ??? I have been told it is very difficult especialy if the plastic square drive shaft is still in the gear box ...is there anything I should be careful off or anyone got any advice , or should i leave it for my mechanic ???...
