tyre sizes

hi all im putting my 17s back on but im in need of tyres there 205 40 17 but they look alittle small so i was wanting 205 50 17 but what the widest i i could go with out problems? i know 215 45 17 are more common but would 225 50 17 be ok? meny thanks
