A new twist on the death of Rover!

My better half has just come home from work and told me a story. She was chatting to a member of the public who used to work at Longbridge on the production line and said towards the end of Rover the managament said Ford were shown around the plant and the general consensus was they were there on fact finding / assets buying mission. He strongly believes that Ford was the FINAL nail in the coffin for Rover as they wanted to get rid of the competition. My conclusion is that he believed a partnership might have been on the cards like with Honda? Has anyone els heard of this?
