DIY 18" Rover 75 MG ZT Hairpin Alloy Wheel Refurbishing.

DIY 18" Rover 75 MG ZT Hairpin Alloy Wheel Refurbishing.

The wheels on my ZT are not bad cosmetically but, bit tatty on closer inspection. No need for a total strip and powder coating, but the visible side of the wheel could do with a freshen up. With that in mind made a start.

Here's what I used in this first picture. Wet and Dry Paper Grades 80; 180; 1200 and 2000. Some ZINC 182 Base Coat; 400ml of Rover's Silver Sparkle MBB and 600ml of clear top coat lacquer :~

After treating the light and one area of deeper kerbing damage, firstly grade 80 using stopper where necessary, then followed with grade 180 and finally 1200 wet and dry sanding paper. Washed off with warm water and allowed to dry in the sun. Then given 2-3 coats of ZINC 182.

This ZINC 182 protective base coat was rubbed down next morning with grade 2000 wet and dry used wet with lots of water. Washed and dried off leaving a pleasingly smooth surface for spraying the Silver Sparkle :~

Then a few coats of clear lacquer top coat. Looking much better now with masking removed after top coat fully dried :~

Then on to the car. Now that's a nice improvement.

The attachment images shows work starting, light and heavier kerbing, stopper used after those kerbing areas were rubbed down with grade 80 paper used dry held around a small piece of wood to smooth the kerbing to an acceptable level.

I am pleased with the results and total outlay less than twenty quid. Plus, lots of "elbow grease" rubbing down those rough areas. My arms and hands still ache. I could have got all four wheels refurbished to a high standard for £80. However, that would involved tyre removal ( and fitting and balancing after powder coating ) plus a 120 mile round trip twice to Brum and back. The unseen "blind" side of the wheels were in very good condition. I think that is because the harsh alloy wheel cleaning agents used in previous ownership was only applied to the cosmetically visible sides of the wheels.
