Expansion tank issues

Hi guys, any advice would be appreciated. I came home after a short drive, opened the boot on my 54 plate TF to retrieve my bag and the expansion tank was hissing. Closer inspection and there is a small crack in the expansion tank. Quick call to local garage I have used in the past asking for it to be changed.....mechanic making noises about HGF, problems getting parts etc..if I can source one he could fit but might still be HGF. So my question is do expansions tanks just fail due to age or could there be a more serious problem. The HG was replaced in Oct 13, there is no sign of coolant in the oil,mayo etc? Should I get a new on or would a second hand one do...I have seen them on the Rimmer website, or should I call the guys who did the HGF if it might be related? Sorry to waffle ...... Hate having her off the road and want to make sure I do the right thing.
