My first month with a 3 Form Sport

Hi,

This is my first post since buying my Hello Yellow MG3 Form Sport from Kerridges in Suffolk a month ago. If anyone is looking for good dealer in east Anglia I thoroughly recommend them. They let me have a demo car twice for as long as I wanted and gave me a good deal on my trade in.

Now for the nitty gritty.

I have now done about 1,500 miles. I followed the guidelines in the handbook about not going over 3,000 revs for the first 900 miles. Well, I did take it up to about 3,500 rpm at times when joining motorways otherwise it would have been painfully slow!

The engine is freeing up a little now I think. I have filled up four times and each time the MPG has been in the range 42.5 – 43.5. The onboard computer says 44.3mpg. Just about all my driving this month has been on long distance “A” roads or motorways, with a little suburban thrown in.

No problems as such. I received a dent in the roof, thanks to a conker, one hour after I bought the car! This has now been fixed thanks to the local Dentwizard guy in Norfolk. I also had to get the wheels balanced as there was a slight shimmy at 70mph – one wheel needed an extra 30g and the other 40g.

The shimmy has now gone and I've told MG Motors to take a look at whoever is balancing the wheels at Longbridge!

I've also taken the opportunity to use Dinitrol 3125 in some of the cavities – bonnet, boot, doors etc, plus Dinitrol 4941 on parts of the chassis. I've run out and ordered some more so I'll let you know how it goes.

When I had the wheels off for balancing I took the opportunity to take a closer look at the wheel arch areas. There is a plastic shield/cover that protects the front area from water ingress. I removed it and Dinitrolled the wheel arch area just at the back of the front wheels for added protection before putting the plastic panel back.

While I had it jacked up I found a spare bolt laying in the front sub frame. Hopefully it was left by a fitter and didn't fall out of anywhere!

I've also bought a set of the black rubber mats that fit in the doors, cup holder etc from Ebay. They only cost a few pounds and they look good.

Next purchase might be some reversing sensors, which are only available on the MG3 Style, but I preferred the wheels on the MG3 Form Sport, which look like they are less prone to kerbing. I'll have to pluck up courage to drill holes in the bumper though.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with the car. It is quiet, comfortable with a good stereo system and lots of toys.

I know the engine comes in for some stick, but it is quiet and has plenty of torque around town. When you do want to accelerate you just need to learn to be at least one gear lower than you think you need – and use the revs.

It is easily capable of sitting all day at 70mph and accelerating in fifth on a motorway, albeit not too quickly.

I'm still treating mine with a bit of care, but the demonstrator had more than 3,000 miles on the clock and felt a little looser. Once you got the motor wound up it felt quite quick.

Anyway, if anyone is thinking of buying one I would recommend it. Is it a BMW? No. But then it costs less than half the price of a 1 series.

I think the interior is actually very good and doesn't have “scratchy” plastics as some reports have said.

If anyone has any questions I'm more than happy to answer them.

Steve
