Temperature gauge speed.

I've just got a 25. The head gasket has been changed due to failure.. I have a query regarding how quick the temperature gauge should reach the normal operating temperature.

Car had been sat there all after noon. Within 3 miles of normal driving on quiet A roads at 10pm, the temp gauge was at normal reading.

From cold to normal operating temp in 3 miles - is that correct?
