Very smokey idle and then lots of blue smoke?!

Car (120k 1998 400 GSDi) has been like this for a while but is getting worse. Leave it idling for couple of minutes and the smell stings the eyes not much to see visually but you know there's a lot of unburnt fuel/oil going on! If you then jump in and drive off the next 1/2 mile she chucks out loads of blue smoke! Like a trail following you down the road! It's a nightmare when I have it in tge workshop as it fills the place with eye stinging smoke and embarasing at MOT time!

It's a one owner car and we've serviced it religiously for the last 15 years but I'm wandering what's going on? Blue smoke means oil I think? Turbo leaking oil at idle some how? It's not particularly smokey when driving and if you do put your foot down its black smoke that follows.

Any ideas?
