After some advice/ opinions. Problems after head gasket repair

Around 400 miles ago I had my hgf repaired which included gasket, skim, water pump, thermostat and cambelt. It has all been running perfectly up until today.



This morning on the way to work I noticed that the heater was still blowing out cold once the engine was up to temp. This prompted me to check the expansion tank which I found to be low on coolant so I topped it up. Then on the way home from work I noticed a lot of steam coming from the area of the expansion tank, despite the temp guage still sitting at its usual position just below half way. After the top up the heater did blow out some hot air but kept coming out hot then cold, then luke warm.



Does anyone have any ideas where I should start? I've read it could be as simple as the expansion cap failure so I've ordered a new one this evening so will give that a try.
