Scrapyard visit Monday 19th January 2015
My son needed a N/S/R upper suspension arm and coolant bottle for his 214,000 mile Rover 620ti daily driver. I spotted one in a local yard and got two good used replacements for him.
Whilst there I had a look around and noticed an 03-Reg 75 1.8t there which had been largely ignored by the parts vultures. There was also a Diesel 75 which had seen many visits by the vultures.
The 1.8t was sitting on its brake discs and I asked if it could be raised as I would like to remove the two good headlight assemblies and the turbocharger if that was worth having. Would need to check. The helpful boss soon had two of his staff raise the car safely and move other cars so that I could access and work on it more easily. It was very cold but so sunny, that the strong and blinding low winter sun made working on the car a tad difficult.
I soon had the bumper, crash bar and radiator removed. My 24volt Impact Driver with fully charged battery was a boon with all those nuts and bolts to remove. I soon had both headlights removed and as the car was a PRT version, I carefully removed all the coolant hoses and the PRT. I wanted to upgrade my other ZT to PRT sometime and these will come in useful for that.
Removed the boost hoses and rotated the turbine shaft and checked for lateral and radial play in the bearings and seals. There was a little but, it was in much the same condition as a spare I already had. So as I was getting a bit cold, decided to leave the turbocharger which was obviously a used replacement. It had white paint ID markings on it which suggested it had been obtained from a used parts dealer. Had the turbocharger been used and hot, that a paint would be burnt off. Puzzling that. It was a tidy car on arrival. The last 1.8t I removed the Turbocharger from had a near perfect turbine shaft.
Got a few other useful odds and sods from the car and was charged a total of fifty quid for the 75 and 600 parts. Good value . Attached images show the car I worked on. The final image the two parts my son needed for his Rover 620ti.
One negative. Someone had removed one of the bulbs from one headlamp and annoyingly, also the retaining clip. I shall have to find a clip ~ I already have a spare bulb.
