Just bought a MG ZS 180 major problems?

Last week I bought a 2003 MG ZS with 90,000 miles on it and a full year MOT. As soon as I saw it I loved the look. However after 2 days thats when the problems started. First off, Saturday morning it wouldnt start just click click click. Ok battery must be flat as the guy I bought it from said it sat for 6 weeks and he had to jump start it. When I looked at the battery first thing I noticed was the battery was only a 300 watt (I just put in a 380 watt battery in my 1.1 Peugeot) and that the negative connector was very loose despite being as tight as it would go. So I put the 300 watt battery on charge and put the battery from Peugeot in the MG wrapping the terminal in tin foil to make it thicker, MG started up first time. I drove about 70 miles that Saturday enjoying my new MG. At night went for a take away and on way home all of a sudden I had no speedometer, no rev counter, the lights on the dashboard came on ie handbrake, srs, abs and no full lights only side lights. I got home and next morning car started fine went for a drive and within 15 mins same thing happened but this time the car grounded to a halt. I managed to jump start it and get home. I have since bought the recommended battery for the car, a 500 watt YUASA but somebody said it might be the alternator?

Anybody give some insight? Ive priced an alternator at £105 (Bosch) but dont want to spend needless money if its not that.

Another question, I didnt get a handbook with the car and noticed sometimes when I put the key in the ignition I get a beep beep beep beep before it starts. What is this?
