PG1 Ratios
Evening chaps - woah first time starting a thread here for a while!
My girlfriend's ZR 160 has been a loyal workhorse for the last few years - apart from having to replace the head gasket a couple of weeks after we bought it and having a few electrical niggles it's been pretty much perfect for 2 years +.
Unless it blows up which given it's current state seems unlikely *desperately finds some wood to touch* I think we'll have it for a couple of years more and to be honest unless we get really hard up I'd quite like to keep hold of it permanently. I'm lucky to have plenty of storage for vehicles so I can't see any reason with values as low as they are at the moment that we shouldn't keep hold of it for years to come.
Anyway, enough rambling. My biggest bug bear with the car is and has always been the gear ratios.
1st through 4th are fine, the close ratios work well with such a revvy little engine, but 5th is just far too short. Ideally it'd have a 6th gear but I for all intents and purposes that's completely unrealistic.
What I would like, however, is a longer 5th. At the moment at 80 it's doing pretty much dead on 4000rpm. By contrast my Mercedes sits at 3000 at 80, which makes a world of difference.
I thought about using a diesel 5th but my mechanic says the gears are not a straight swap from diesel to petrol boxes. Can't remember why.
I therefore want to know what the longest 5th gear is that can be used in a 160 PG1 as a straight swap.
What were the 220's and 620's like in 5th? I would imagine a 620 had quite long ratios...
Perhaps a straight swap with a 220 / 620 box would be easier - and with the added bonus of a Torsen?
So yeah, who knows anything about PG1 ratios
Cheers
Ben
