Cleaned L series PCV, Lots of oil being vented?!
My 400 smokes like a good'un at idle, no colour to the smoke but it fills a large workshop up in minutes with smelly eye stinging fumes. Decided to have a play with the PCV valve to make sure its working.
Took it off and cleaned it through with some thinners. Was full of oil but not sludged up.
Put it back on, turned engine on and tried the squeeze test on the pipe that goes from the head to the pcv to no effect. Then disconnected the pipe (at the valve end) to test the pressure on the pcv. Very very slight suction from the PCV (not noticeable to the touch) itself but noticed a lot of pressure from the pipe that vents from the head and alot of oil vapour! Is this normal?
Seems like the engine has a lot of pressure trying to get out? Ive read that with the engine running, if you remove the oil filler cap there should be slight suction? With my filler cap removed there is alot of air/pressure coming out.
Do i need a new pcv and/or is lots of positive pressure venting normal on an L series?
shes done 125,000 easy miles with regular servicing.
cheers
