214 se 8v 1999 heater intermittent

Hi just picked this up with 78k on clock but some electrical issues have appeared. Most important at present is that the heater fan chooses when it wants to run. Having read the posts I looked at the resistor block and at least one coil was damaged so have just replaced that. No change. Tried to drop the fan/motor out but cant seem to without removing the whole heater which I would like to avoid. Fuse is ok. Fan switch seems ok. Is there anything else that could be in the system such as a contactor or relay that could be iffy?

Is it possible to get the motor/fan unit out without disconnecting the water hoses?
