How do you test if your ECU is working correctly?

Hi all,

I am a new member and i was wondering if anyone knew how to test if your ECU is working correctly?

My engine management light came on so i took it to the garage and when they plugged it into the machine it came up with so many errors and they said they didnt know which one to look at so they reset it and said when the light comes back on bring it back in and they would be able to decipher which one it is. (I know this is not the best plan of action but they did it anyway).

Anyway after resetting it they drove it down the street and parked up (small forecourt) and left it for me to pick up at the end of the day however when i come to pick it up it doesnt start. I have never had this issue before but after speaking to the garage they believe it might be the ECU.

I am a bit strapped for cash right now so i dont want to go straight out and buy an ECU in case they are wrong. Is there anyway of testing the ECU is working properly? (preferably without getting the garage involved).

I must admit i am not the most mechanically minded so if you would please break it down in laymans terms it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

James

Ok so after further research it looks like scrappy will be £200 for an ECU and then labour costs to sort out. This is all providing that the issue is the ECU.
