Airbag rivnuts

I bought an airbag off ebay, but unfortunately the seller missed pointing out it had a rivnut missing!















I thought it would be simple just to insert a rivnut, but I can't get the rivnut to fully sink into the hole! It sits a few mil above the hole!







Having never inserted a rivnut before, done plenty of rivets, would it be possible to partialy compress the rivnut before fully inserting it to compress it fully? If you know what I mean!
