Coolant Loss

Evening all,

I have a 2004 Rover 45 with 50k on the clock (it was my Dad's from new and he covered under 5k per year). I needed a cheap car and the trade-in they offered him on a new car was pitiful so I bought it from him. I am aware of the K-Series head gasket history but failure rates on the later cars were significantly improved so I took the risk.

This morning the low coolant light was on when I started the car so I checked the header tank. Despite me checking it only last week (I do this regularly for obvious reasons) it was on the low side so I topped it up with OAT. I noticed a small amount of emulsion-like sludge on the coolant filler cap, the kind you would normally get on an oil filler cap that has had water ingress. I checked the oil filler and dipstick and they are clean.

There are no obvious signs of coolant leaks and the temperature is normal. I asked Dad and he said this happened to him only once in ten years of ownership. He just topped it up and never had another problem.

Is this early signs of head gasket failure do you think or is there something else I should check?

Cheers,

B
