EGR and MAF.

Hi, if the EGR is blanked off/removed from the inlet manifold do I still need the MAF sensor. L series mechanical injection 220sd? Reading posts on here it appears that the sensor is only used to control the EGR so if blanked the sensor does nothing. Sorry for being ignorant but new to diesels.
