HOW TO - Changing rear hubs, rear pads, setting handbrake cables
A quick 'how to' - it's easy, but make sure you have the right tools
Balljoint splitter, 12mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm (socket/ratchet and spanners), 34mm socket, breaker bar, hammer.
You'll need to remove the hub nut first - take the wheel off, remove the hub cap from the wheel, stick a screw driver into the hub nut and press out the part of it that has been 'staked' in, put the wheel back on:
Put handbrake on, put it in gear, chock the wheels. Use your 34mm socket with the extension/breaker bar:
Put all your pressure onto it just until you can feel a hernia coming out of your abdomen. It will come loose. ;)
Unscrew hub nut - tap out lightly with a hammer:
Unclip handbrake cable:
Two short 12mm bolts on the back of the caliper - use a decent socket. If they don't budge, try a different spanner. Don't strip the bolts! Pry the caliper off the brake disc:
15mm bolt here - this is tight, but gets progressively looser once it's out - it has threadlock on it:
The top balljoint nut is standard 19mm (aftermarket balljoints may have a different nut size). It may have a metal cap on it, just bend the edge off the nut:
15mm tie-rod ball joint - easy!
Seperate those ball joints:
Wiggle the hub off the driveshaft, and move it away:
Remove the caliper carrier bolts (17mm) - this is probably easier with it on the car, these bolts have been undone recently though (they're TIGHT).
The old hub:
New one on - took about 5 - 10 minutes to reassemble - always lightly brush on grease to keep everything nice, especially on bolts/nuts:
