What Makes a Scrapper?

My battered old Rover 620i is in the garage getting its timing belt done at 180,000 miles. The body has its far share of dents and scrapes and there are a couple of small points of rust damage on the arches which I have filled. Its very reliable and a great car for the East End of London as I don't have to worry too much about it getting scratched or stolen as it probably isn't worth more than £300. I've driven it all over the UK and Ireland and since I got the nice leather Ti seats fitted it is a very comfortable long-distance vehicle.

The new timing belt should get the engine to 240,000 miles. One mechanic I met said that he had seen one of these 2.0 litre engines go to 550,000 miles with just routine maintenance, oil and belt changes, and that they never fail if maintained.

So what will eventually 'go' and mean that it is no longer worth carrying on repairing it?
