Overheating Rover 25

Hey! New here!

I have just bought my rover 25 2004 1.4 petrol about a month ago and was warned about the headgasket issue and was told it was starting to lose compression. Anyway today as I was sat idling at lights, the water temp shot up, but settled back at just under half on the gauge when moving. This continued to happen at every set of lights on the way to work. Is this the head gasket failure advancing? And will I be able to drive it the 25mile journey home tonight or should I ring the AA?
