620ti Progress so far

620ti Progress so far

I've been steadily attending to the jobs that needed doing on my 620ti when I acquired it.
The rumbling noise that I noted on the test drive was confirmed as the alternator after I removed the aux belt, I have never felt one as rough and with so much play in the bearings. I had also noticed the battery light was very dim with the ignition on and then stopped coming on apart from briefly from when you turned the engine off. Removing the charge indicator wire at the alternator and earthing it put the lamp on and confirmed there was also an electrical fault in the regulator. So a new alternator was fitted, which was supplied with mounting studs for a rear heatshield, the one I took off didn't have a heatshield or even the studs, this could explain why the car has had 4 alternators over a period of about 8 years. As a temporary measure I've made one out of some aluminium until I can get a proper one.
I also bought a new thermostat and single terminal temp sender this morning as the gauge indicated it was running cool, never reaching halfway. On removing the top hose I found the thermostat had separated from the brass collar that holds it in place in the hose. I also discovered (after the factors have shut) that the new stat is the wrong diameter and the hex on the temp sender is 16 instead of 13mm a/f, so I wonder if this is the wrong part too? I'm now stuck until Monday when I can go back to the factors. It seems this business of them identifying the correct parts using the reg of a car isn't as effective as looking up the correct part by model and year on a computer or in a book. I say this because virtually every item I've ordered for the Rover by registration results in the wrong part being supplied, including the first alternator!
I shall just have to carry on cleaning up the engine bay, it's amazing what a bit of effort in that area can make.
