Rover 45 - handbrake compensator at an angle

Rover 45 - handbrake compensator at an angle

Good morning , yesterday my handbrake was sticking on , on the rear driver's side ( only slightly) . I managed to free it by using a screwdriver to release the CAM at the caliper .

When I removed the rear ashtray I noticed that the compensator is at an angle . The driver's side cable is higher when the handbrake is engaged. The passenger side sits lower , very much like in the picture show in the link ( but at a more extreme angle)

The passenger side handbrake engages well - the driver's side is almost ineffective .

Could it be that the cable has stretched? Caliper pins have been cleaned up on both sides and new pads fitted. The imbalance of the parking brake was picked up last year in its MOT.
