broken clutch
Its a pretty straightforward job once you have dropped the gearbox out. Its dropping the gearbox out that takes the time. I would also recommend you ask a friend to take the weight of the gearbox from above if your doing it on the drive otherwise you have a tendency to drop it on yourself when pulling it off the engine.
It would also be a good idea to look at the driveshaft and 1st motion shaft oil seals whilst your at it.
I'll be doing the gearbox on my ZR next week after the oil seal failed on the first motion shaft and contaminated the clutch plate, lots of clutch judder first thing in the morning until it burns off .
I will be replacing the gearbox and clutch at the same time. I have already cleaned the replacement box off and fitted new genuine Rover seals ready for the swap over. The old box will go off to the re-conditioners as its done less than 50,000 miles
If you get a garage to do it your looking at £200+ so its well worth having a go at it yourself. You also don't know what clutch the garage will put in it. A lot of garages will usually fit a cheap one unless told otherwise. They also wont change the oils seals either. They will usually stick the old oil back in the box also rather than filling it with fresh oil and if the do change it they usually put the wrong stuff in. Avoid places like Mr. Clutch and fast fit places as they usually only replace the defective part not the whole clutch then charge you for a full one.
If you do it yourself expect to pay anything for £45 (Transmech) to £100 (LUK, Valeo etc...)for a replacement clutch kit, £20 to £40 for the gearbox oil and upto £50 for the oil seals if you decide to replace them. You will also need a clutch alignment tool.
