Dodgy gearbox
I replaced all the seals on my MGs R65 Gearbox last week as there was a nice big pool of oil under the car if left for more than hour. I changed the seals (all genuine Rover) using the proper tools and then, put the gearbox back in as you do.
The following day i jet washed off the drive so it was all nice and clean. This morning after pulling off the drive i was greeted with a 6" round pool of foul smelling gearbox oil under the car. I jet washed the gearbox all off again at work and drove home.
Both driveshafts are still dry, there appears to be oil dripping from in between the gearbox and engine which can only mean that the seal on the main shaft in the gearbox has failed. I can only deduct that something has caused the seal to fail again, probably play in the mainshaft.
Anyway to cut a long story short i have decided to pretty much write the gearbox off, if the seals have failed that quickly there is obviously something wrong elsewhere in the box
I do have a R65 gearbox from a Rover 25 which i know is in good working order, apart from the speedo take off its broken. I intend to just take the one off the gearbox already in the car. Is there any difference between the ratios in the standard 1.4 R65 box and the 1.4 MG ZR box. I'm guessing not but thought i'd check first
