MGTF 1.8 Please Help Me!!

Hi All

I will start by saying I know nothing about cars so am way out of my depth even posting on here in front of the Gurus! I have never even changed an air filter! , although I did clip on a new distributor cap on an Astra once (Very proud Moment!).

I bought the MGTF 1.8 2005 around a month ago (mainly because I loved the look of it). It seems to have a few problems some which have developed in the last few days.

The car now sometimes Idles at 1500rpm rather than the 900rpm that it always used to. It also continues to rev once I have come off the accelerator or fully engaged the clutch or even sit in neutral. While it was doing this in neutral I sat and pumped the break pedal and the engine revs got higher each time. Some times I can start the car and the idle seems to be fine and return to 900rpm.

It is very difficult to drive the car around the city when the traffic is stop start as it revving all over the place and all of a sudden the idle will drop when I pull away. So I sound like an 80 year old revving the pant off it in 1st gear or stalling.

I have never driven this model car before but it has always seemed down on power. It pulls nicely is 2nd or third (other than the idle prob etc) and the start of 4th, but it has no upper end power range and I constantly have to drop down a gear for a slight incline or to accelerate.

There is also a shrieking sound while accelerating which I cant tell where it is coming from (but I don't know if that is normal for the model) and it seems to answer you back when you rev as if the timing is wrong.

If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated. I hate having my pants pulled down when taking cars to the garage due to lack of car knowledge. I bought the car against all advice as I just loved it and there is something about having the Union jack on the side that I love.

Many Thanks

Shaun
