Renewing the Timing Side Engine Mount of an MG ZT 1.8t.

When I bought my first project MG ZT 1.8t a couple of years ago, when I replaced the Cylinder Head Gasket I was disappointed to discover the main Engine Mount Rubber on the Timing Side of the Engine has separated. I put it back together like that and planned to replace the broken Rubber Mount ( The one with the 18mm Nut ).

That I did not was simply due to little driving of the car and when I did drive it, no clonks or other worrying noises or engine roicking on high revs gear changes.

Anyway, late this afternoon about thirty minutes after it stopped raining, I decided to replace the broken mount with a good one purchased from a local breaker yard a few days ago.Got my 2 ton Trolley Jack under the alloy sump to support the engine to avoid it dropping when the mount was removed. Used stout cardboard piece folded to protect the alloy sump from the lugs on the trolley jack lift.

I have removed four of these mounts over the past three years and it is not difficult if you used the 4lb Club Hammer and stout Chisel carefully.

However, as soon as I hit the chisel to remove this broken one, unlike all previous ones I removed, no sign of any "give" with that very first whack on the Chisel with the Club Hammer. Worried now I gave it several more hefty blows and still no signs of it moving at all. Continued with more heavy but carefully placed blows and the lugs I used to place the business end of the stout chisel were becoming badly out of shape. At last, it moved a couple of millimeters. More blows saw it moving more easily and eventually it became free and was easy to remove using only my fingers. That was a relief.

On reassembly of the replacement mount, I used copper based grease on all the many threads involved. So should I need to undo any again, that should not give any problems. The threads on that broken Mount were corroded. Not seen that with others I've removed. The grease should avoid any similar problems.

I then took the car for a brisk run and it felt more "tight" when changing gear briskly than previously. Maybe the placebo effect but, glad the Mount is renewed anyway.

The attached series of pictures show what was involved.

This was the problem. Fractured Rubber from base of mount :~

Broken and separated Mount base :~

The Chisel and Club Hammer used to remove the old broken base. :~

Cleaned and greased threads of Mount location :~

This was the good used Mount fitted.

Check fittings after short brisk run :~

Another job completed.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
