Terminal V6 HGF? - Pics, vid, urgent
I just finished my first brake disc and pad change this afternoon, then had to take it all off and put the old kit back on. Its hard to hold a caliper in the cold October rain.
After resealing the brake reservoir I did the rest of the under bonnet checks. I was then shot in the stomach by seeing this:
I had been concerned the oil was low only 14 days ago so topped it up and noticed the tiniest speck of white on the dipstick, but none in the tank. I assumed it was a bit of kitchen towel residue or some other substance, feeling confident in the KV6 being less vulnerable to HGF. There was more on the stick today.
After initially feeling very sick I've done lots of reading about this issue on the 180 and 190, which gave me some hope that my frequent short trips and unusual lack of long spirited drives recently have caused condensation. There is also a lot of steam at the moment which I perhaps foolishly thought was just to the cooler weather drawing in, however on the video below from 2 weeks ago the engine was warm:
Going into the garage tomorrow but I thought I'd try and rule some things out so I have more ideas what to ask them to check. In terms of history, it has never suffered from HGF and is almost exactly 12 months since I had a full 90k cambelt, waterpump and thermostat replacement by the excellent Lates600. Since then I have only done about 7000 miles so the fact the oil was on the lower side in the first place was concerning. The coolant is clear and hasn't needed topping up in those 7000 miles and the car has never overheated. I've driven these sheds for years and each previous has had HGF so I'm pretty cautious including letting the engine warm as much as possible prior to any stupidity. I'm tempted to take it out for a long run to see if that helps but I don't want to risk making anything worse if not.
Much appreciation for any comments or suggestions offered, let me know if you need further info.
