135 cam question

I fitted some 135 cams at the weekend. One measured 9.5, the other 8.8. People tell me however this may not tell me whether they're 135 cams or not, as there are other ways of getting that increase in lift.

There was another post somewhere discussing this, but can't find it.

Can someone please explain how you get the increased lift if the cams doesn't measure up to be from a 135?
