So why a Rover of MG?
What models have you had/got and how come?
My story is Even back in the early 90's i was seeing the benefit of diesels. Not just that they were economical but with the advent of the pug engine and Turbo in the Bx they were now faster than the petrol counterparts and i could see where they were going.I had a few slug diesels pugs, and a crappy golf, which wouldnt pull you out of bed,but the one that made me sit up was the Rare Horizon fitted with the 1.9 pug engine in and and it was like driving an XR2.
I remember buying an Astra diesel from an Auction for 4 grand, and hated it from the moment i turned the key and it was all down hill from there.Just aswell cos they really struggled to go up em at about 60 bhp.I quickly sold it and went on the hunt.
Then one day Rover took the engine from the BX and stuck it in a rover which for me was not just power, but a car that looked good too.The rover SLD Turbo.
Looking through the Auto trader i found one,the outside was good but the inside needed sorting having had belonged to a crane company.I had a friend with a breakers yard so a full interior was going to be just a matter of deciding on a good one.
If i remember right i gave about £4500 for it.
I was hooked. The first diesel that not only looked good but went even better.
I ran that for quite sometime until the 400 bubble turbo diesels came along and then dropped in price, i bought one at 18 months old with just under 70,000 miles on,ex lease.I had the clutch pedal height altered straight away.Kingfisher blue.
i made it mint and ran it for over 4 years without any mechanical issue whatsoever sometimes it covering 5-600 miles in a day.
Whats more, that car sold 3 others, through their buyers having experience in its passenger seat.A fourth made the fatal mistake and bought a petrol and i remember well the complaints about the consumption.
I then found the BMW 6 pot diesels and rover and me went into hibernation until about 7 years ago finding my other half a silver 45 connoisseur which she ran for years, again with no real issues other than the renown turbo intercooler pipe and the heated seats went cold.
Forward to recent,i was scanning ebay looking for possibles for my lad who is coming of age and i got the rover bug again after seeing a MG ZR with 28,000 miles from new at £600.
And thats where were at.It needs a few jobs doing but it will make a good one.Underneath even after all these years is still green.
After my car it felt old school and a bit lacking in poke but being the 1.4 petrol was going to,but the more i drive it the more i warm to it,the handling gives something mine doesnt and im finding myself taking that car out while leaving my own
What about you,why MG/Rover????
