difficult starting - new finding

Hello All. I had post and search everything on the forums I needed to discover why my Series one would not cold start, Reset timing, changes bleed off pipes etc, still I need advice.

I changed the primer bulb. Beware that you test these for bypass leaks in a bucket of water or using soapy water. Every one of those from Ebay leaked back. Eventually I bought a Yamaha marine version, no By pass on that.

Sadly not even that solved the problem still so I purchased flap type valve non return as belt and braces, fitting that after filter. Still no perfect start.

To me it had to be the pump. After some swearing and cuts trying to see the underside of the diesel pump. Felt underside and it was quite oily.

Pushed a rag under. When after squeezing the primer bulb and waiting a bit I discovered it appears that the timing solenoid seal is leaking.

See Pump1.jpg Photo by kaptainjimmyladd | Photobucket from this forum.

It does not appear to leak when driving or standing. I assume that it allows air into the system.
However the solenoid is directly below the HP distribution block, behind is the rear mount plate which means limited space.

Seeing as I do not find a puddle of diesel after driving and most times it starts hot. I do not think it is the block seal.

I would like to remove the solenoid or at least try nip the T 30 torx screws without removing the entire pump as it is a huge schlep to get to the mount bolts.

One more item. The car accelerates fine but does not rev above 4000. I assume this is the MAF and not the timing soleniod.

Has any done this before? Is the seal an 'O' ring. I always seem to end up with strange difficult problems that should not occur.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
