Pop goes the ..... cam-caps

Pop goes the ..... cam-caps

Friend mailed me some news about his V6 blowing another cam cap, this time the front, last year was the back one. Last winter I heard of three owners who’d popped cam-caps, sadly in one case, contaminated the belt and gear causing it to slip and wreck the engine. No, this is not poor maintenance, as I know he’s checked the vent holes and they’re clear. But what happens is the condensate doesn’t get on too well at temperatures below minus 20, The temperature outside was 27 below, and we believe that whatever condensate exists rapidly freezes either in the breather hoses or as soon as it his the arctic airflow in the inlet manifold, resulting in a blocked crankcase with no chance of venting.

As a temporary solution my friend has fitted a universal vented fuel tank cap, I came across an article about Mini's which were fitted with a vented oil tank cap (GFE6003).

Is there any kind soul into mini's and who could tell me whether the mini cap is a straight fit for the KV6. (Must be a vented type)-or other cars with vent oil caps that might fit.

This is only intended as a deep winter solution, and would be replaced by the regular cap come spring.

Any other suggestions would be welcome too, especially if it saves some cars from our northern scrapyards, not many Rovers around anymore, got to save the ones we’ve got.

Regards
